Family constellations

Book cover, title absent fathers lost sons, author Guy Corneau

Absent Fathers, Lost Sons – the search for masculine identity (Guy Corneau)

When a father is absent, e.g. because of long working days and only present to his children at weekends, it may be difficult for a son to identify himself with masculine energy. The son may (unconsciously) have difficulty in getting free (emotionally, mentally) from his mother. Or he may find intimacy difficult or struggles with his sexual identity. Perhaps he holds a negative image of the ideal father. Possible he doesn’t know how to use his aggression or ends up in a depression.

.

Nest scents – about the meaning of the parent-child relationship in a human life (Piet Weisfelt)

Piet Weisfelt explains about that the way you approach your environment, is based on themes that play a role in the parent-child relationship, for example attachment, symbiosis, identity development and loyalty.

The themes also come from transactional analysis and neuro-linguistic programming.

.

Sparks of desire – systemic work, perspective and practice (Wibe Veenbaas, Joke Goudswaard)

Wibe Veenbaas is co-founder of the Phoenix training institute in Utrecht, where, among other things, the training systemic work (family constellations) is provided. This book is about systemic work, and specifically working with family constellations. Both the practical implementation and background themes such as parents and children, identification and trance, guilt and innocence and the path of desire are described. The book contains many examples, poems and stories and is primarily intended for people with a therapeutic background, but also perfectly readable and understandable for others who are interested in this.

Trauma healing

Waking the tiger – healing trauma (Peter A. Levine)

After studying how animals deal with trauma, Peter Levine translated this into a method to heal trauma for humans. A trauma is a response to a life-threatening situation. The autonomic nervous system and part of the brain react with a physical reaction: fleeing, fighting or freezing. Animals know how to release this energy again; people however often don’t. The energy of the primary physical reaction remains in the body and can be released through this method. Peter Levine has devoted his working life to research on this and treatment of traumatized people around the world.

The body never lies – the lingering effects of hurtful parenting (Alice Miller)

Alice Miller was a German psychologist, writer and painter, who became known for her research into and her fight against child abuse. She says about this: the human body carries with it all the experiences of life and oversees all your inner truths. You have suppressed experiences from your childhood and you are no longer aware of it. However, they still have consequences for your body. Signals and symptoms indicate that your body still has to resolve what these experiences are concerned. You notice this in aches, ailments and diseases. By starting to deal with them, you can come into contact with the lively and once hurt child in yourself.

The drama of the gifted child – the search for the true self (Alice Miller)

German psychoanalyst Alice Miller has studied for many years how childhood forms the breeding ground for life and where the ‘I’ of the person is rooted. A lot of psychological suffering can be explained from childhood: children easily adapt to the often unconscious wishes of parents. Own needs and desires are suppressed. They hide their emotions with masks, which hinders free contact with the ‘true me’.

.

The body remembers – the Psychophysiology of trauma and trauma treatment (Babette Rothschild)

This book is about physiology, the impact of trauma on the body and the phenomenon of somatic memory.

The memory often appears in the symptomatology of a post-traumatic stress disorder, nightmares, flashbacks, fright reactions, and dissociative behavior. In essence, the body of a traumatized individual refuses to be regulated. Rothschild presents principles and not touch techniques to let the body do its healing.

Other healing approaches

The journey – a practical guide to healing your life and setting yourself free (Brandon Bays)

Brandon Bays is an American motivational author and speaker and best known for her book The Journey. She followed an intensive path of various alternative therapies to heal herself from a tumor in her belly, which had the size of a football. She has transformed this healing journey into a form of therapy and describes this therapy in this book. The therapy is about going directly to the origin of long-term emotional and / or physical problems. It is an imaginative process that gains access to memories stored in specific parts of the body.

My voice will go with you – the teaching tales of Milton H. Erickson (Sidney Rosen)

The American hypnotherapist Milton Erickson often used ‘learning stories’ in his practice to get his patients moving. He knew that these stories influence them on conscious and unconscious layers. This book is about 100 of these stories and his approach to hypnosis and psychotherapy.

Transactional Analysis, the handbook (Ian Stewart, Vann Joines)

The Canadian psychiatrist Eric Berne was specialised in group therapy and in social psychiatry, striving towards healing people. He developed a model to make the terms from psychotherapy also available for the client: Transactional Analysis. The key to this analysis is a transaction, as the fundamental unit of social intercourse. Berne also defined a stroke, as the fundamental unit of social action. The starting point is that earlier life experiences form the base of how adults take decisions for themselves and their environment. Berne defined three ego states: parent, adult and child. As an adult it is possible to react from a parent or child position.

Healing without Freud or Prozac – natural approaches to curing stress, anxiety and depression (Dr. David Servan-Schreiber)

David Servan-Schreiber was trained in France and the United States and became a professor of clinical psychiatry. He recognized the merits of, e.g. Tibetan medicine and alternative health care. He describes seven effective alternative approaches instead of long-term and radical treatments such as psychoanalysis and antidepressants. The basis of the problems lies in the emotional brain, which corresponds to the limbic system. It is the key for causes and possible cure for many chronic conditions such as stress and depression. This brain controls feelings, mood, behavior, blood pressure, and immune system.

Book cover, title loving what is, author Byron Katie

Loving what is – four questions that change your life (Byron Katie)

“The Work”, as it is also called, consists of four questions: (1) is it true? (2) can you absolutely know that it is true? (3) how do you respond, what happens when you believe that question? (4) who would you be without that thought? Then you reverse that thought. By answering these four questions, you get the opportunity to see what is bothering you in a different perspective. As Katie points out, “It’s not the problem that causes our suffering, it’s our thought about that problem.” It helps with: relief from depression, reduction of stress, improved relationships, reduced anger, more mental clarity, more energy, more peace.

.

Communication

Nonviolent communication – a language of life (Marshall B. Rosenberg)

This book is about recognizing your own emotions and the underlying needs and those of the other. The way in which people respond to each other, in particular their use of language, often leads to a negative spiral in which irritation, anger, resistance and fear prevail.

Consciously nonviolent communication helps you to stand more firmly in life: say what you really want and hear what the other person means to say. Instead of ending up in a power struggle, use a language of compassion to create room for connection.

Eckhart Tolle is one of the most beloved and inspiring spiritual teachers of the moment. His books The power of the now and A new earth are the best known and have been bestsellers for years. He inspires millions of people worldwide to find more love, happiness, creativity and inner peace by living much more in the Now. In short it is about letting go of the identification with your analytical mind and the ego. You are not your thinking. You can free yourself from psychological pain. Your authentic power is present as soon as you surrender to the Now. The biggest blockage to getting into the Now is often the way you are in your relationships. The author explains that focusing on the Now can lead to the recovery of inner joy and peace.

The life changing magic or tidying up – the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing (Marie Kondo)

Marie Kondo explains in detail what the best way is to tidy up and organize. The entire process cleans up your inner self at the same time. In particular, three pages about philosophy are an important starting point for cleaning up: which calm and inspiring environment would you like to create from the bottom of your heart. In other words: get rid of what distracts you from enjoying. Marie Kondo has become a global speaker and her practice is very successful.

Shirley MacLaine is best known as an actress and dancer. She has played in many films. Through her work she has also traveled a lot and has met many people. This book is the fascinating account of a journey of discovery to a higher consciousness, which can inspire you to be more aware of your own life and experiences.
