The significance of trauma for people with congenital heart defects is large.

As soon as a (newborn) child is diagnosed with this abnormality, a cycle of hospital visits immediately follows. Both the parents and the child and any siblings are suddenly faced with a life-threatening situation.

The excellent medical care in itself usually leads in ‘healthy’ directions. However, another drama takes place on another level. And, of course, there are the various emotions around the corner: anger, sadness. But also the practical side of life is touched. There is almost no greater interaction on a family.

Through a good friend with a congenital heart defect I came into contact with the Patient Association Congenital Heart Defects. In our meetings we spoke regularly about topics such as trauma healing and family constellations. This led to the writing of articles for the quarterly magazine Sinus of this association. The first article appeared in the summer 2019 issue. It was nicely related to the theme of this edition: trauma.

.

In the article you can read what is generally understood by trauma. In addition, it is about the possible situations for people with a congenital heart defect in a family, whether it is a child or a parent. Furthermore, trauma healing receives attention. And not to forget, the possibility to look at possible changed dynamics in the family through a family constellation. Often these dynamics are disruptive: normal family life suffers. So such a dynamic creates confusion and entanglement. You can read more by clicking on the image, then you will read the article in PDF.

The second article appeared in the fall 2019 edition. A sequel to the previously published article, but now aimed at raising awareness of your personal resources. These help you maintain an easier balance for yourself.

The third article appeared in the summer edition 2020: “transition, letting go and trust.”

The fourth article appeared in the autumn edition of 2020: “how to deal with a setback.”

The fifth article appeared in the winter edition of 2020: love and relationships.

The sixth article appeared int the spring edition 2021 with the theme: covid-19.

The seventh article appeared in the summer edition 2021 with the theme: participation.
